PAINTING TIPS
The hairs in the Glass-Art brushes are super soft. Normal acrylic brushes are too stiff for most glass painting and won’t allow you to get good coverage. One exception is a fine liner when used on top of a painted area for details.
All instructions are the same for all glass paints but you might need to put a drop of water in the Folk Art Enamels to thin them. You can also use the multi-surface paints from either Folk Art or DecoArt.
Filling In The Design
Use the paint full strength whenever possible. Too much water will break down the bonding agent that allows the paint to adhere to the glass. You will need to add a drop of water if using Folk Art Enamels. DecoArt Gloss Enamels don’t usually need any water added. Plump the brush up with paint by loading it and patting the paint into the center of the hairs on the palette, then scoop up a little more paint on the tip of the brush, and don’t wipe it off.
You want to use lots of paint on the brush to get the best coverage. Reload often. Try not to apply any pressure when you fill in an area or pull a stroke. When you apply pressure, the paint won’t cover the area as well. It is almost like you are painting the air above the glass.
Use the glass art liners or round brush to basecoat the petals and leaves. Apply the paint thick for the best coverage. You do want ridges. These will be the vein lines so pull the brush strokes in the direction the vein lines would be.
Allow areas to dry completely before applying a second coat and details. You can use a hair dryer or heat gun to speed up the drying time between coats. Make sure you don’t get the glass too hot with the heat gun or burn the paint.
Thin Lines
A drop of water can be added to the paint for thin lines. You still want to use the paint as thick as possible. Practice on a plastic sheet protector or plastic plate.
Correcting Mistakes
If you make a mistake, wipe it off and try again.
To fix small mistakes, use a micro stylus or smudger to remove the paint. You can scrape large areas off with a craft blade.
