STAGE 1 BASECOATING
CUT SURFACES
Basecoat the following with a wash of color, allowing some background to show through:
Bluebird head and back: Baby Blue
Bluebird chest: Light Buttermilk
Bluebird eye & beak: Lamp Black
Chickadee body & face: Light Buttermilk (Be sure to include the chickadee’s eye.)
Chickadee cap & beak: Soft Black (Be sure to go around the eye.)
Chickadee wing & tail feathers: Grey Sky Cardinal body: Brilliant Red
Cardinal eye: Lamp Black
Cardinal beak: Scarlet
Branches: Espresso (Do not put pine needles in at this time.)
STAGE 2 HIGHLIGHTING & SHADING
BLUE BIRD
Shade around the eye, beak and under tail feathers with Blue Harbor. Highlight the beak, wings, and around the eye with Grey Sky. The highlighted dot in the eye is Sand Grey. Shade around the chest with Baby Blue.
Deepen the shade areas with Paynes Grey. Tint chest and the back of the head with Scarlet.
CHICKADEE
Grey Mix: Whenever Grey Mix is called for, brush mix Light Buttermilk and Soft Black.
Tail Feathers: There are two tail feathers, and each is painted separately. Brush mix Grey Sky and Soft Black and float on the lower part of the lower tail feather. Float Light Buttermilk on the tip of the feathers and blend into the grey mix. To create the feather effect, use the chisel edge of your brush. Highlight the tips of the feathers with strokes of Snow (Titanium) White. Repeat on the second tail feather. When dry, tint with Raw Sienna.
Chickadee Body: Float Light Buttermilk on the bottom center of the
bird’s body, feather out to the left and right. Float Grey Mix under the head cap using the chisel edge of your brush the head cap and gently blend into Buttermilk. Tint along the bottom of the chickadee’s belly with Traditional Raw Sienna; highlight with Snow (Titanium) White.
Chickadee Face: Float the Grey Mix under the black cap starting at the right side of the face. From the left side of the face, float Light Buttermilk into the Grey Mix; tint with Raw Sienna; highlight with Snow (Titanium) White.
