SOURCES
Antique shops, garage sales, flea markets
My sister, Sharon, and I recently bought a cute, small house in London, Ohio. We’ve had a good time painting and decorating it with a mix of French and English Country, both of which reflect our heritage.
We found an excellent source for surfaces at Rt. 42 Antique and Vintage Marketplace, just 12 miles up the road. In particular, I like to look for items that can be repurposed, like this old silverware chest, which will now be used to put a nice selection of K-cups for my coffee maker. My favorite is Dark French Roast. Voila! A French theme for this design!
PREPARATION
Trace The Design
Hint: Did you know you can get a more accurate tracing if you trace upside down? It makes you think about what you’re doing. Try it.
Once you have picked your surface, enlarge or reduce the size of the pattern to fit.
Secure a piece of tracing paper to your copy and carefully trace everything you see on this design.
However, please read the “Transfer the Design” section before doing so after your surface preparation. There will be some specific areas to transfer later. I’ll explain why at that time.
Chest Preparation
I completely gutted the felt and silverware holder from the inside of this chest, removed and kept all the original hardware in a small container, putting it in a safe place for assembly later.
Then I sanded, removing any shiny finish and rough spots. While I used Ivory Black for the outside and Rookwood Red for the inside of my chest (because they “go” in my kitchen), you can use any color you wish
for yours. Apply at least two (2) coats with the sponge brushes. Allow to dry well between coats and lightly sand, if necessary.
Tape the pattern to the surface, and only transfer the border around the design.
With the No. 8 Chisel Blender, paint the inside of the border with two (2) coats Grey Sky acrylic. Allow to dry between coats. We will paint the border, almost last, to help with any necessary “clean up.”
