PREPARATION
Trace the line drawing onto the tracing paper and use the graphite paper to apply it to the Mi Teintes paper with a stylus or pen. You may use either side of the paper, though one side has more texture than the other. Do not press hard or you may indent the paper. Once you have the pattern on the surface, tape the paper to the hardboard.
Before applying any color to the project, use your stylus to impress some of the white feathers going over the back and shoulders (across the black feathers in the photo). Use the smaller end of the stylus and press in a few feathers (check the photo for reference).
Tip: When painting with colored pencil, I find it much easier to apply many light pressure layers rather than starting with medium or heavy pressure - reserve the heavier pressure for well into the painting to fine–tune your lights or darks.
Tip: Use a sharp pencil and little circles to apply colored pencil unless painting something with more of a linear form. For bird feathers, use short directional strokes.
Tip: When you have many layers built-up but need to correct something, use a kneaded eraser and lift out the
color. Don’t rub the eraser around as it could cause unwanted smearing. As you lift color out, knead the eraser to clean it and continue lifting color as needed.
