BACKGROUND LIGHT AREAS
   FIGURE 8
BACKGROUND
LIGHT AREA
For the background, start in the lightest area behind the bird’s head. With light pressure, fill in this area with Olive Green. You may need a couple of coats of this color. (Figure 8)
Go over the Olive Green with Apple Green but keep it more in the center, not totally covering up the Olive Green. Apply Yellow Chartreuse in the middle area as well, going over the Apple Green. This is the lightest color, so it should be more in the center of this section. (Figure 9)
DARK AREAS
For the top dark area, basecoat with Olive Green (one or two coats). Very lightly and randomly, add some Tuscan Red. Don’t bring this down into the light section. You may also pop in some Indigo Blue in this dark section. (Figure 10)
Go over this section with Dark Green and lightly blend it into the Olive Green in the light section. Don’t bring the Dark Green down into the Apple Green color. This creates a gradual transition of color. You may need two to three coats of Dark Green. (Figure 11)
FIGURE 9
For the section right under the lightest area, basecoat with two coats of Olive Green. Use Olive Green to blend this area into the lightest section. Use Dark Green for the lower area where it leads into the darker lower section. This will take a couple of coats of Dark Green. (Figure 12)
For the bottom darkest section, use Cool Grey 90% first and Dark Umber to basecoat this area. (Figure 13)
Randomly pop in some Tuscan Red and/or Indigo Blue.
(Figure 14)
Go over the area with a couple of coats of Dark Green. Use Dark Green in the lower left corner and behind the bird’s tail feathers with Cool Grey 90% and/or Black to further darken those areas. You may need to use medium pressure as the layers start to build up. Evaluate your background and add more darks or lights as needed. If your background is too choppy, it helps to go back to the medium value color of Olive Green or in the dark areas Dark Green or Cool Grey 90% to blend out the lines. (Figure 15)
