people’s televisions through fixed coaxial cables as opposed to the
over-the-air method used in traditional television broadcasting (via radio
waves) in which a television antenna is required.
Direct-To-Home typically refers to
satellite TV broadcasting directly to a
dish antenna on the roof of a house.
IPTV or Internet Protocol Television
It is a process of providing television (video and/or audio) services
through the use of Internet protocol (IP) networks. These IP networks
initiate, process, and receive voice or multimedia communications using
Internet protocol. These IP systems may be public IP systems (e.g. the
Internet), private data systems (e.g. LAN based), or a hybrid of public
and private systems.
Often this is in parallel with the subscriber’s Internet connection,
supplied by a broadband operator using the same infrastructure and
possibly bandwidth.
IPTV can provide excellent Interactive Television but the term
“IPTV” is not synonymous with Interactive TV. IPTV is also referred
to as Internet TV and Telco TV. However, a distinction between “IPTV”
and “Internet Television” is that unlike the Internet, IPTV is Internet
Protocol content (in the form of packets) provided by network operators
(and others) over closed networks.
