   PERFORMANCE ART
The return of live entertainment coincides with the reopening of one of Can- ada’s most acclaimed concert halls — and the debut of another Toronto hot spot that’s arriving with some serious industry cred
   Massey Hall:
The newly remastered setting of many of our favourite live albums (Neil Young, Blue Rodeo, Chilly Gonzales, etc.) is re- launching as part of the new Allied Music Centre, which also introduces a club with city views, a cozy sixth-floor theatre, and (most importantly) an improved basement bar. Sounds good to us.
Hot tickets: Gordon Lightfoot (Novem- ber 25/26/27), Broken Social Scene (December 16)
History:
Drake’s never-ending quest to make Toronto cool(er) continues — this time with a new mid-size music ven- ue developed in partnership with Live Nation, out on Queen Street East in The Beaches. With a capacity of 2,500, it hits the sweet spot between intimate and energetic — just like all the best Drake songs.
Hot tickets: Bleachers (November 9), July Talk (December 9/10)
SOUND AND VISION
A Northern Ontario bargain hunter recently dusted off a masterpiece by none other than Ziggy Stardust himself. After taking home the small artwork for $5 from a landfill near North Bay that lets visitors shop for a small donation (the “Machar Mall,” if you will), the buyer set out to investigate the veracity of the David Bowie signature on the back. Canadian auctioneer Cowley Abbott eventually had the painting authenticated as “DHead XLVI,” part of Bowie’s series of portraits painted throughout the ’90s. It went on to sell at auction in June for $108,120. The takeaway: always inspect flea market finds carefully — and don’t second-guess signatures purporting to belong to famous figures. Who knows what sort of watercolours Prince might have dabbled with in his spare time?

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney Before dinner party conversations be- came all about podcasts and prestige TV, they used to be about big fall fiction. The latest novel from literary sensation Sally Rooney — a story about the highs and lows of success and love that plays out through email — promises to re- suscitate at least a few dormant book clubs. The jury’s still out on whether it will manage to jump-start any style trends, à la Connell’s chain necklace.
