In this collection, as she is accustomed to doing, Chirui once again found ways to collaborate with artists of different generations and different regions across Mexico. Decorative bands were handwoven by artisans from the Taller Textil Yolcentle workshop, which was founded by Hilán Cruz Cruz, and local artist Remigio Mestas oversaw the creation of four huipils traditional tunics—demonstrating the unique weaving, dyeing, and embroidery techniques of several Indigenous groups.
Collaboration with locals extended to the models as well. “We opted for a unique casting for this show [with] lots of local girls. And we thought, ‘Why transform them into something else? [Let’s] just enhance their own beauty,’” explains Peter Philips, creative director and image director for Dior Makeup.
The overarching aesthetic for the show was a natural, glowy look with a flush of colour on the cheek and an enhanced brow—an homage, of course, to Kahlo’s own trademark brow.
“[Kahlo’s] beauty is unpolished; it is raw, honest, and authentic. We wanted a no-nonsense look, where models looked like their beautiful self— without frivolities.”
To achieve this, Philips used Diorshow Brow Styler and Dior On Set Brow, and eyes were subtly accentuated and opened up with a touch of Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara.
For a pop of colour on the cheeks, Philips utilized Rosewood—a new shade of the bestselling Rosy Glow blush, and a shade that Philips says “boosts and enhances natural features, and will look different on everyone according to their tone.”
Models’ hair were parted in the centre and separated into two plaits intertwined down the back—a style native to many Mexican and Indigenous cultures, where women wear braids intertwined with silk ribbons and decorated with flowers.
These radically intentional choices result in a collection that honours Mexican colours while achieving a delicate balance. Each Cruise collection has served as an opportunity for Chiuri to highlight the depths of a new culture and the exceptional craftsmanship that lies within it, and Cruise 2024 is no different. Chiuri’s homage to Kahlo and Mexico proves that the strongest artistic expressions are achieved through collaboration.
