SWALLOW BUGS
The Swallow bug is very similar to the Bed bug, except it is slightly smaller and
narrower in appearance. The name comes from the barn swallow bird, whose
nests were commonly infected with these pests. A Swallow bug infestation will 1 6
die out by itself in a few days, unlike the Bed bug. They can carry viruses, but
are far less likely to transmit them to man.

Life Cycle 8
The female can lay up to five eggs in a day, with 200-300 produced in 10 4
a year. They are usually in hidden locations, and hatch in 2-5 weeks,
depending upon the temperature. Nymphs go through eight instars to
reach adulthood. The adults can live up to three years. Photo Courtesy of UNIVAR
CONENOSE Actual size 3/4”
The Conenose Bug is also known under a variety of other names—such as the “Kissing Bug” or the
“Assassin Bug”. It can be a problem for humans as it will get into houses and feed at night on the blood of people
as they sleep. Usually the bite is not felt right away, but it will be in a few minutes. They can be quite painful, and
if scratched they can get infected. In other countries it is a vector of Chagas disease.
The name comes from the bug’s long beak that has piercing and sucking mouthparts. They enter houses
through cracks, torn screens, or clinging to pets or people. Once inside, they will hide in bedding, under furniture,
or in cracks on walls or the floor.
