HAND AND POWER TOOL SAFETY

                                                      By Frank Lorey

Despite the wide variety of hand and power tools, there are some basic safety rules that apply
to all types. Proper use will avoid problems; keeping you safe and helping your tools last a
            long time.
            • Wear the proper clothing for the job. Avoid loose-fitting clothing and jewelry that could get
snagged or caught in moving parts on power tools.
            • Choose the right tools for the job. Inspect each tool for damage before using. Make sure
any safety guards are properly in place on the equipment, or tag it as “defective”. Powered
saws must have the guard covering the teeth except where the saw actually meets the
                wood.
            • Always wear your personal protective gear, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for
each tool or piece of equipment.
            • Never carry a tool by the cord, and make sure to unplug tools or equipment before
changing bits, blades, or doing any maintenance to the tool.
            • Do not carry a power tool while it is plugged in with your finger on the trigger or switch.
            • Always use grounded extension cords, and plug in to GFI (ground fault interrupter) outlets
when working in areas where moisture may be a problem. Never remove or alter the
ground plug on a cord. Do not use an adapter to defeat the ground plug.
            • Do not use a rotary hammer while standing on a ladder. Do not use any tools that create
high torque in confined spaces where your hands or body may be crushed against the
sides, or on a ladder where you may lose your balance.
Do the proper maintenance to keep tools working as they were designed. Store tools properly
to keep them in good working order.
