Brackets
Brackets should be used to contain an acronym after a full name.
Example:
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).
Capital letters
Use minimal capitals – if the heading is not an official title or proper noun, only the first word should be
capitalised.
Examples:
Delivering on our promise
Style manual
Annual report
Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1998
Hyphenated titles do not capitalise the second part of the name.
Example:
Pig-footed bandicoot
Grey-headed flying fox
The first word of a Latin name is capitalised and the full name is italicised.
Example:
Phyllopteryx taeniolatus (Weedy Sea Dragon)
The names of simple species are all lower case.
When to use capitals with government, department, ministers and executives:
Government
The official name of a government should be used first, with capitals. After that it should be the Government,
unless there’s more than one government mentioned. Lower case should be used when more than one
government is being referred to.
Examples:
The Victorian Government has committed to new measures to protect threatened species. The
Government will unveil its news strategy on Monday.
The Victorian and NSW governments have met to discuss the Murray Darling Basin Plan.
The Victorian and NSW Governments are in discussion about fisheries regulations that apply to the
Murray River and adjacent lakes. The Victorian Government manages recreational fishing in Lake Hume
while the NSW Government manages recreational fishing in Lake Mulwala.
