‘Brushless direct current’ (BLDC) motors are widely used in Robotics due to their high efficiency and reliability. However, designing effective control systems requires accurate motor models that are often unavailable. The goal of this project is to identify key motor parameters by system identification and frequency response experiments, using “Bode plots” to extract physical constants. These parameters are implemented in mathematical models to design PI-based current and position control loops using ‘field-oriented control’ (FOC). The result is a validated control strategy, improving energy efficiency and dynamic stability under varying loads. This project provides “Mentee Robotics” with tools for optimizing actuator performance and reducing manual calibration.

This project developed a mechanical system to simplify wheel replacement in harsh field conditions, thus reducing soldiers’ efforts and injury risks. Following the initial phase, several components required redesign, including the rod, wheel seat (“Mercedes”-shaped), and the wheel itself. To improve stability, extra weight was added, but that impacted the system’s appearance. A damping spring was integrated to ease wheel extraction. Lately, a support rod was proposed to reduce system stress, replacing the added weight and offering a more efficient and balanced solution.
