The goal of this study was to determine optimal operating parameters for a Jameson flotation cell, while comparing its performance to the existing flotation system at ICL Dead Sea Works. Pilot-scale experiments were performed using a 500 L “Jameson cell” by varying feed flow rate, nozzle diameter and air injection rate. Samples were collected from the feed, product (TOP), and residue (TAIL) streams, and analyzed using ion chromatography. The results demonstrated that the Jameson pilot cell significantly outperformed the conventional flotation system, achieving higher NaCl removal, enhanced selectivity and improved potassium recovery. Furthermore, the Jameson cell exhibited greater operational stability with lower standard deviation. These findings support the implementation of Jameson flotation technology to enhance NaCl separation efficiency and overall plant productivity.

Toward Identification of the Secreted Antimicrobial Compound by Khat's Endophytes

The khat plant (Catha edulis) has notable resistance to disease. This resilience may be linked to endophytes - microorganisms living within plant tissues, that exhibit antimicrobial activity. The endophytes secrete bioactive compounds. To identify these antimicrobial compounds, the most promising two endophytes were tested for their antimicrobial performance on minimal media (DF and BH) containing limited chemical composition allowing the identification of the secreted compound. Performing the Kirby-Bauer method, on BH medium with 0.2% glucose was found to give the best results, allowing the growth of the bacteria. Analysis of the agar inhibition zone around the endophytes bacteria will reveal the identity of these compounds. The composition of active compounds secreted to the agar plate will be discussed in the poster.
