drew our attention to another interesting gene, also chosen for in-vivo analysis, encoding expansin, a plant, and some green algae protein that has an essential role in loosening structural cell wall cellulose.
Deletion mutation of the expansin-encoding gene resulted in slight attenuation in virulence relative to the wild-type. Yet, the deletion mutation of the ubiquitin-encoding gene resulted in significant attenuation in virulence. In addition, colonies of the latter were greater than those of the wild-type strain, containing significantly higher numbers of bacteria and significantly longer cells. Moreover, this deletion mutation resulted in a more resistant population to harsh conditions during the stationary growth phase.
