The dog in this photo is Australian Champion Auslese Bacchus who was born in June 1970 and was
five years of age when this photo was taken. Bacchus was imported to Australia in his dam by Mr & Mrs
N. J. Pettengell. His sire was English Champion Chesara Akilles (Imp from Sweden to UK) and his dam
was Jentris Gloriosa (Imp to Australia from UK in whelp).
Bacchus was one of several Auslese Rottweilers that formed the foundation of our kennel, Allerhochst
Rottweilers.
The cart was a scaled down replica of a German Dray, constructed totally in timber with 5 piece timber
spoke, steel banded wheels. His girth strap was a human back brace and his chest plate was one from
a Shetland pony. This photo was taken during a wine festival held in the Barossa Valley, a well known
wine producing area in South Australia and an area originally settled by many German immigrant fami
lies. On several days of the festival Bacchus pulled his cart at events ranging from children rides to the
main procession on vintage day when he carted a load of grapes from the current vintage. Bacchus was
much more at home carting than he was in the show ring and loved all of the attention that he got
from crowds who were fascinated by a dog pulling a cart. Rottweilers were not common in those days
in Australia.
Apart from carting the thing that Bacchus loved the most was visiting schools to sit and talk and play
with children in the younger classes and he was in heaven with children all around and over him.
c dog bac then
but Bacchus would have made a great one".
