Spongiosis and the different types of dermatitis. It is difficult to separate out histologically
the various causes of an acute dermatitis be it atopic or contact allergic. Clinical correlation
is required. However epidermal hyperplasia associated with spongiosis is seen in
nummular eczema and in chronic allergic contact eczema. The papillary dermal vascular
prodominance seen in stasis dermatitis helps diagnose this variant.
