TECHNOLOGY VISION 2035
8.2.2 Strategy Implementation in Material and Fabrication Technology Development
Development of low cost, high strength, natural
and recyclable materials is need of the hour for
the Indian automotive industry. Both metallic and
non-metallic materials have a significant role
to play in terms of vehicle weight reduction and
improving fuel economy. Important mission plans
for appropriate material development for the
automotive sector are:
MISSION PLAN I
------------------
Development of high strength steel to replace
conventional steel. This can reduce upto 30%
vehicle weight in components. Similarly use of
high strength steel in total body structure can
further reduce upto 15% vehicle weight.
alternative fuelled vehicles.
MISSION PLAN II
------------------
Steel and cast iron structural parts can be
replaced by aluminum structural parts and
components to achieve vehicle weight reduction
upto 40 to 60%.
MISSION PLAN III
------------------
Development of carbon fibre reinforced polymer
(FRP), which can reduce vehicle weight by 50%.
MISSION PLAN IV
------------------
Structural integrity and weight savings can be RESPONSIBLE AGENCIES
further achieved by application of novel materials ------------------
such as polymer, metal foams, synthetic Leading automotive
