Mock Exams 2019
Dear Year 11,
“Happy New Year” is swiftly passed in Year 11, as you will be sitting your mock exams in the first weeks back at school after Christmas. This is a period of 10 school days (Monday 7th – Friday 18th January 2019), where each of you will sit exams in all subjects that will have a written exam in the summer. In Languages, you will have oral, listening, reading and writing exams, and some of the practical subjects will have a practical exam within the mock exam timetable.
The preparation for the mock exams needs to mirror what will happen for exams in the summer, or as close as possible. Since the start of Year 10, we have run a series of seminar programmes on study skills and revision strategies, which has been reinforced within tutor time. In the next few weeks you will have the opportunity to discuss a revision planner with your tutor for the Christmas holiday and the duration of the mock exams. All subjects will have provided ample revision material in the form of checklists, revision packs and past papers, which will be on Firefly as well, so you should have everything you will need in order to prepare effectively over the holidays.
The mock exam timetable is enclosed within this booklet, along with some of the revision strategies, an exam kit list and a copy of the examination hall code of conduct. This booklet will also be shared with your parents, and they will be actively encouraged to go through it all with you.
It is natural for people to feel nervous going into the examination hall, and it is important to realise that some of you will require a little bit of extra support throughout the exam period as stress and tiredness start to emerge. Needless to say, your tutors are all on hand, as am I as your Head of Year. Mrs Strange and Mr Gregory in the Pink House are available and work closely with me and all of you in Year 11 throughout the examination period in particular, as we all work towards ensuring each of you can achieve your personal best. Support at home is just as vital as the support in school, and it is important that there is clear communication between home and school. Speak openly with your parents if you are struggling, as chances are we are talking with them as well.
Following the mock exams, there will be a parent consultation evening run over two evenings for Year 11. This has been provisionally scheduled for Friday 1st February (Surnames A-L) and Tuesday 5th February (Surnames M-Z). This will give you more opportunity with subject teachers and your parents to discuss the results of the mock exams and identify plans and strategies for the rest of the year.
This first true experience of the examination hall in Year 11 is a vital opportunity for getting into the swing of exams. Remember Year 11, as long as you know you have done as much as you can, no one can ask anything more of you!
We’re all here alongside you, so go and be your best!
Mr Farmer Head of Year 11
