BUILDING FOR OUR FUTURE CAMPAIGN
WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN?
One doesn’t often hear the words “Tech grad” and “philosopher” in the same sentence. However, maybe it’s because I’m
getting older that I’ve become more philosophical. Looking at how life unfolds, it seems certain that circumstances play a
key role. For example, after attending a freshman orientation program, I came in contact with a Tech senior by the name
of Ray Mattox. As it turned out, Ray was a Chi Phi and the Alpha. He invited me to attend a rush party at Chi Phi and I
never went to another frat rush party. I didn’t need to.
Four years (plus one extra football season) later, I left Chi Phi with a lot of memories and great friends. In April, my wife and
I attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Bob and Robbie Revel. Steve Swift and I traveled Europe for several weeks
one summer. Ralph Perry, Bill Caye, and I shared an apartment together after graduation. Over the years it’s been great
to see a lot of brothers at the house for football games. I even learned a lot about diversification as we allowed Yankees,
my big brother Rich Suttmeier for example, to join. And man, did we have a ton of guys from Augusta. Sadly, we’ve lost
a few including my dear friend Bo Jett and my friend and business partner, Herb Skinner, class of ’59.
All of you have similar stories and fond memories. Our Chi Phi experience made our time at Tech very special. The house
itself added to the enjoyment. The location gave us the first shot at “lost” girls driving thru campus looking for directions.
How could they resist the opportunity to see the Zebra Lounge? And once we got rid of that pesky living room furniture,
we had one hell of a party room. Perhaps the most important feature at Chi Phi during my “era” was Mother Brooks. Mary
was such an asset to the fraternity as a friend to us and a protector for our dates.
If you’ll take just a few minutes to think about your time at Omega, the answer to my initial question should be
easy to answer. Why should I support the Campaign for Chi Phi? How can you not? The house needs to be updated
(honestly, it needed to be updated when I first arrived in ’63). Make a pledge and
help make the campaign a success. Pledges can be made using the form and return
envelope included in the mailing, or made online at www.tinyurl.com/ChiPhiGT.
