A t the North American Prairie
Aviary, the air hums with the
calls of native North American
birds—the North American sandhill
crane and the greater prairie chicken.
Completed in July, the Aviary is
more than just a showcase of natural
beauty; it also serves as a vital
educational platform, shedding
light on the conservation challenges
facing local species. With popula-
tions of the greater prairie chicken
dwindling to alarming lows and the
Mississippi subspecies of sandhill
crane facing extinction, the Aviary
offers a poignant reminder of the
urgent need for action.
Nestled within an area of approximately
3,000 square feet, the Aviary features meticulously
designed habitats to accommodate the unique
needs of its inhabitants. A pool allows the crane
to engage in its natural beak-probing behavior,
while lush vegetation provides a haven for foraging
and nesting, particularly benefiting the greater
prairie chicken. Through future partnerships with
local agencies and initiatives such as rearing and
release projects for the greater prairie chicken,
Brookfield Zoo Chicago is committed to making
a tangible difference in the fight to preserve North
American grassland ecosystems and the species
that call them home.
