                                                                 Species: Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)
                                                                Age: 5 years old



                                                                Adult size: Adult females are about 4 feet 2 inches tall and
                                                                weigh up to 140 pounds. Orangutans are unique because
                                                                there are two forms of sexually mature males: “flanged”
                                                               and “nonflanged.” At over 5½ feet tall and about 250 pounds,
                                                               flanged males are much larger than females. Nonflanged
                                                               males are smaller—some the size of females—and lack the
                                                               secondary sex characteristics of flanged males, which
                                                              include cheek pads and a large throat sac.
                                                              Physical features: Like other great apes—gorillas,
                                                              chimpanzees, bonobos, and humans—orangutans
                                                              have a large body and no tail. They are covered with
                                                             long, shaggy hair that is reddish-orange to dark brown
                                                             in color. Their arms are 1½ times the length of their legs.
