4      Animal Head

                                                 Roosevelt Fountain was created as a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt,
                                                 the 26  president of the United States. Four bronze animal heads on
                                                      th
                                                 limestone bases are installed at points along the walkway that encircles
                                                 the fountain.
                                                   The animals—an American elk, an American moose, an African
                                                 kudu, and a water buffalo—were chosen to commemorate President
                                                 Roosevelt’s wildlife conservation policies and his hunting expeditions
                                                 in Africa. Judson also contributed to the design of the Fountain itself.

                                                           LOCATION:  Forest Preserves Nature Trail

                                                           If you’ve strolled along the Forest Preserves Nature Trail leading
                                                           to Swan Lake, you may have spotted a 32-foot-tall dinosaur in
                                                           the woods off the trail. That’s Archie the Anatosaurus, a life-sized
                                                           replica of a duck-billed dinosaur that lived 70 to 80 million years ago.
                                                             Archie is one of nine fiberglass dinosaurs that were displayed
                                                           at the 1964 New York World’s Fair—the main attractions in the
                                                           Dinoland display sponsored by the Sinclair Oil Corporation.
                                                           The energy company was famous for its dinosaur mascot and popular
                                                           dino shows. Sinclair became part of the Atlantic-Richfield Company,
                                                           which gifted the statue to the Zoo in 1970.
                                                              Sculptor Louis Paul Jonas was a brilliant taxidermist, exhibit
                                                           designer, and master sculptor. He was the first artist to work with
                                                           paleontologists to create dinosaur sculptures that are anatomically
                                                           correct and life-sized. His wildlife dioramas are found in dozens
                                                           of museums around the world, including the American Museum
                                                           of Natural History in New York.
