GOLDEN FROG t the great things that lie ahead.
In this issue of Gateways, we celebrate the 50 anniversary of the Endangered Species
th
Act. This federal legislation has prevented the extinction of 99 percent of the plants,
animals, and fish it protects and conserved millions of acres of habitat these species
need to survive. Today, the legislation is more critical than ever. More than a million
species of plants and animals face extinction, according to a 2019 report from the
United Nations’ Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and
Ecosystem Services.
Brookfield Zoo and the 237 other zoos and aquariums accredited by the
Association of Zoos and Aquariums have played a vital role in many of the successes
of the Endangered Species Act. Our institutions work cooperatively to save threatened
and endangered species, conserve wild habitats, advance animal well-being, and provide
impactful educational programs. Over the past five years, we collectively contributed
more than $1 billion to fund conservation programs worldwide.
We have also opposed efforts to weaken the Endangered Species Act and eliminate
protections for particular species, such as grey wolves in parts of the country. Thank
you for your support, which enables us to do this crucial work.
During the upcoming holiday season, we hope you come out and enjoy
Holiday Magic®, a beloved tradition at Brookfield Zoo. This year, it will be held
on select nights from November 24 to December 31. Please spread the word
to your friends and family!
