Chile - Museum of Contemporary Art, Santiago, Sur Sur Exhibition
Sur Sur is Spanish for South South, and was the name of a group show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santiago,
for which curator Marisol Vargas brought together dance and visual artists from New Zealand and Chile to develop dialogue across the Pacific Ocean, with an intention to destabilise
the boundaries between creative disciplines, in a spirit of decolonisation. In the context of Sur Sur, Mistranslation Laboratory was a performance and an installation. The detritus of performances become the exhibition, continuing the circulation of Mistranslation Laboratory for two weeks after the performance season completed, after performers had left the country. Objects generated through performance tasks – works on paper, costumes and props – proliferated across the walls.
In Santiago the Mistranslation Laboratory cast multiplied to
six, with Angel Garcia (speaking in Spanish) and Alys Longley (speaking in English) hosting the work as fallible
choreographic scientists, with dancers Macarena Campbell, Carol Brown, Daniela Marini and Natalia Bakulic performing Concentric Islands, Shed for Poetic Encounter, and introducing the OPENING (ABRIENDO) apparatus. The Santiago performance was part of a larger group show, a current in a flow that included works by Elisa Loncon, Carol Brown, Marisol Vargas, Mark Harvey, Bernardo Oyarzún, Máximo Corvalán Pinchiera, Dominique Goujon.
