RECONNECTING
Brian soon found out that his sister was very involved with her church and its regular activities. Although she made time for him, she told him how equally important was her faith and that she donated much of her time to helping to spread the word of God. So, he found himself attending more than one church function. After a while, he began to help with set-up and putting away chairs, etc. He enjoyed meeting the people, and they in turn seemed to enjoy his presence there. He attended services on more than one occasion as well, but he wasn’t feeling that connection that his sister felt. She asked him to keep an open mind and an open heart. She told him that he would understand, in time.
He and Laura would regularly meet for lunch and dinner and talk about their respective jobs, bosses and anything and everything about sober life. They both knew they’d come full circle and now was their chance to reach that always out-of-reach level of “normal.” Brian began to feel a peace in his heart, a feeling of ease for which he was completely unaccustomed. But he knew it was good and that good things had happened, were happening to him. Perhaps Laura was right...maybe prayer, selfless acts, attending church services did indeed play a part in the good and normal life. He felt himself starting to turn around, just as she said he would. He began to look forward to church services each Sunday.
During lunch one afternoon, Laura asked Brian about his houseguest, Lance. “He’s an odd bird, really,” he answered. “He stays in his office downstairs for hours with the doors locked. You’d think he had official
