his pride and joy. Barbara and Gus had taken a weekend to travel to Fishers Island located off the northern fork of Long Island, not far from the Connecticut shore. There were “deteriorating weather conditions” according to investigations by Federal Aviation Administration officials. When the Cessna approached Fishers Island, it was unable to land due to the poor weather and was redirected to Trumbull Airport in Groton, Connecticut. The cloud ceiling was low and the winds were increasing by the minute. Sometime around 5:00 PM radio contact with the plane was lost and it disappeared from radar screens. A woman witnessed the crash and explosion near her home and reported it to authorities who found the wreckage in a wooded area off Smith Hill Road. There were no survivors.
Recalling some of the words from Karina’s written prose, I recognized the connection. It was clear how she would use her poems to expel sadness and hurt from her heart. It made me feel blessed and privileged that she allowed me inside the inner core of her spirit, where only a selected few had been granted access.
