felt like it was detached and rotating around my body as I held out my arms in a vain attempt to embrace my child. I heard her chanting, “Daddy, daddy, daddy,” as it echoed through the trees. The words themselves seemed to swirl around my head, making me dizzy. “Please God, please take me now. Let me go to be with them to the other side, now. I beg you.”
They stood there together seemingly staring at me. Their invisible figures swayed with the wind while they hovered above the ground in white flowing dresses that reminded me of flags flying. As they rippled in sync with the passing breezes, I was mesmerized, frozen, immobile. It was as though a spell had been cast upon me, as though I were my own captor. Waiting for her to speak, I knelt onto the ground as if in prayer.
Finally, her soft voice surrounded me, “She is with child, Lance. She is the vessel for an innocent being. No matter her past transgressions, you must stop. This emerging presence has done no wrong to you, or me, or Katie.” Karina knew everything, but I quickly interrupted her reprimands, “Did you receive my letter, my love?” There was no response. Remembering that I could not communicate with her using conventional methods, I stopped speaking words. But she continued, “This child brings goodness, this child bring love, this child is pure of heart. If you extinguish this life, you will demonstrate the ultimate wickedness.” With that, they vanished. Instinctively, I propelled my body forward into the space they were occupying in hopes of somehow disappearing with them. Closing my eyes, standing motionless, I waited
