THE BETWIXT
Laura asked the preacher if she could deliver the sermon that following Sunday because of some revelations she felt obliged to share. Under the circumstances, he graciously obliged. Besides, it was always good to receive enlightenment from a fellow parishioner.
As she slowly walked to the podium, she felt sad, and yet compelled to deliver what she’d learned and experienced trying to convert a non- believer with a goodhearted soul. She began asking for the congregation’s indulgence as she would be touching on some subjects that may trigger emotions, both positive and negative.
“As many of you know, I lost my brother, my best friend, to suicide last week. This was a life event that has fully tested both my resolve and my faith. Before you begin judging, let me tell you about Brian Gabel. My brother was one of those people who never had good fortune smile upon him. Whenever a door of hope or opportunity would open for him, it would soon slam shut, each time leaving him with the bitterness of disillusionment. Like most of us, he wasn’t without flaws and sins and unlike most of us, he had not yet accepted Jesus Christ into his heart.
With that in mind, Brian introduced me to a term he’d created to describe his, as well as many others’, spiritual circumstance. In a farewell letter he’d penned to me, he asked me to consider the possibility that he was one of The Betwixt, those who do not fall into either unyielding classification of “believer” or “non-believer” -- those who could be deemed in between. The words I read connected so many of the conversations we’d had during my persistent urging that he
