The heart that beats within my chest would simply not permit it.
I no longer doubt
the existence of evil.
I no longer question why bad things happen
to good people.
I accept there are things not meant for me
to fully understand...yet.
I’ve watched others
become conditioned
to the misfortunes of strangers -- no longer shocked, scarcely saddened.
Perhaps stifled emotions, possibly their way
of protecting their own heart.
I vow not to allow
my soul
to view others’ troubles
as commonplace
just because
stories of sorrow, breaking news, enter my life routinely.
My heart will continue to care holding onto the belief that the winds
will carry my compassion to join and grow with yours
along its journey.
