I’ve watched and read. I’ve read and watched until portions of my heart reserved for sympathy are overloaded.
I bow my head
to pray for victims. I cry for loved ones, as if my hopeful tears can somehow ease their pain.
I know
they don’t know I am here thinking, praying for their healing... for answers.
Still, somehow
I feel at least
I owe them this. At times sadness and despair overwhelm me, as though
my empathy has emptied me.
Some say walk away, yet I cannot ignore the suffering -- living my life as though it does not exist.
