Drifting
When we are born and we take in that first deliberate breath on our own, we are signing a binding contract with life. We want to live. Subcon- sciously, we commit to doing all that we can to experience and relish this remarkable gift that has been bestowed upon us.
As toddlers and children, fun, and all that brings us enjoyment, is instinctively our main objective. The exchange of love, smiles, laughter, and affection are that which we seek and yearn for and what makes us complete. We have yet to learn to worry about tomorrow. We have yet to learn enough to shame ourselves into regretting yesterday. What matters is the now. We are not planning, regretting, hoping, and dreaming. We eat what is on our plate and live the life that has been offered to us. We live life in person.
The fact is, as time passes, our youthful mentality slowly erodes as it is replaced with priorities, deadlines, and responsibilities. Slowly, quietly and unknowingly, the devious waters of success carry us away from living life in person. Yet, it’s never too late to begin rowing against these slow- flowing, yet treacherous streams. We are able to shift the currents when we calculate how far we’ve drifted. We can change direction back to where we began...to fulfill the instinctive pledge we made when we breathed in that first breath and signed our contract with life.
When many of us were in grade school, the teacher would recite “roll call” every morning in order to record attendance. We were each expected to respond with an audible, “HERE!” to signify our presence when our name was spoken. Over the years, the routine of that daily ritual has remained in my mind. We should all strive to live our lives today so that if life were to take a roll call to determine if we were living in the moment, we would hear our name and instinctively, joyfully respond, “HERE!”
