"Giant Swallowtail"
The Giant Swallowtail (Papilio Cresphontes) is a wonderfully-"exotic"-looking
butterfly. They are widely spread in various parts of North America, particularly in
the south and the east. With a wingspan about 10 - 16 cm, it is the largest butterfly
in Canada and the United States.
The body and wings are dark brown to black with yellow bands. There is a
yellow 'eye' in each wing tail. The abdomen has bands of yellow along with the
previously mentioned brown.
Papilio Crephontes is mostly seen in deciduous forest that falling of its leaves
annually and in citrus orchards where they are considered major pest. Some
animals defend themselves from predator by mimicry but the giant swallowtail wards
off the predators by producing polymorphism liquid. They fly between May to August
where there are two broods in the north and three in the south. Their main habitat is
the mountain ranges in Jamaica. Swallowtail butterflies begin with eggs. When they
are hatched, they grow into caterpillars before changing into chrysalis. Soon they
will become adult butterflies.
