Chapter Nineteen • Caregiver Support Groups
Caregivers provide care/assistance to those who are unable to successfully
manage their normal daily activities.
There are two main categories of caregivers. One is the formal, or paid caregiver,
hired to assist the care receiver. The other category is the informal caregiver,
generally a family member, who, as time goes on, just assumes more and more
responsibilities for the care of their loved one, as the care receiver loses his/her
ability to care for themselves. These informal or family caregivers provide 80%
of the care nationwide. They provide an average of 4-6 hours of care per day,
and typically, there is only one point person. Caregiver ‘burnout’ is all too common;
and many informal caregivers do not know that there is help available. Support
Groups provide a viable, easily assessable venue to reinforce and buoy the care-
giver on his/her journey.
