September 8. We went out to Margaret’s. Rode horseback. Had
a swell time. In evening we rode around. Had fun.
September 9. In afternoon we went to see Let’s Sing Again and
Case of Velvet Claws. Swell. We went to dance in evening. Larry
Thompson’s orchestra. Swell. Afterwards went riding till real late
with Jim, Norine, Gwenn, and Jimmie. Went to hot-dog joint.
Swell time.
September 10. George went hunting in afternoon. In evening
we had the car. Went out to Wagner’s. Rode all around. Had a
keen fight. Got Mother from her party. Fun.
September 11. In afternoon we went to see China Clipper and
Hollywood Boulevard. Swell. Went to Merrigan’s. In evening Chick
and Pat, Jimmie, Gwenn, George, and I went out to Snyder’s and
danced. Then rode around. Swell time.
September 12. I had my carbuncle lanced twice. Dr. Norris did
it. [In June 1939, Dr. Norris delivered George and Virginia’s first
child, Jack, while the entire multi-generational family lived at 517
S. Church Street.] George and Mother went with me. In evening we
went to the dance. Had a swell time. Went to Wagner’s afterwards.
September 13. Went to show in afternoon to see His Brother’s
Wife. Swell. Went to Merrigan’s. George is mad now. He wants to
help me write in my diary. He wanted to make up so we did. We
went uptown and fooled around.
September 14. I worked at Deppe’s [the department store—in
Jacksonville on the square—where she was paid 25 cents an hour,
and bought her wedding dress]. George worked with Chumley’s
[construction company]. In evening we went to Carrollton with
Jimmie. Fooled around. Went to confectionary.
