Labor for painting windows, per square foot of window, per side painted. Use figures in the
following table to estimate labor for windows larger than 15 square feet (length times width). To calculate
the window area, add 1 foot to each dimension (top, bottom, left and right side). Then multiply the width
times length. For example, a window measuring 4' x 4' with 1 foot added to the top, bottom, right side
and left side would be 6' x 6' or 36 square feet. Then, add 2 square feet for each window pane to allow
time for painting the mullions, muntins and sash. The calculation for a 4' x 4' double-hung window with
two panes would be 6' x 6' + 4', or 40 square feet. Add preparation time for sanding, puttying, protecting
adjacent surfaces and masking or waxing window panes. For heights above 8', use the high time
difficulty factors.
