This speed, which can reach, at the start, up to twenty-six meters per second (90 km per hour), is
maintained, over the 300-meter course, at a speed of 55 km to 60 km per hour.

In England, gambling is permitted for these sighthound races, which take place in the
evening on arenas comparable, but much larger, to those of bullfights; a huge mass of
people crowds the stands, milling about, shouting their lungs out, and betting wildly.

In France, pari-mutuel betting has not, or at least has not yet, been allowed for
sighthound racing. But without even thinking about this question of pari-mutuel
betting, in a word, without a moment's thought of making a profit, extremely well-
known sportsmen in Paris have decided to create, or better, to acclimatize and select
the purebred English Greyhound breed here through public races.

This project is being pursued with great intelligence and method. A circle, in fact, Le
Lévrier, was first founded, which itself gave birth to a Society for the encouragement
of dog racing in France and the colonies. Then a hundred Greyhounds of very high
blood, known, classified and having behind them the most beautiful performances,
were purchased from the most illustrious kennels of English coursing, and
immediately imported here.
