Page 30 - Packing for the Apocalypse
P. 30
These poems were written in late summer of 2020, during our evacuation from the Glass Fire, which ravaged the area where we live, in the heart of the Napa Valley.
Each night, from a safe haven on the coast, we slept not knowing if by morning our house would still be there. The poems that resulted are about loss and fear of loss but mostly about what matters after all.
Now, back in our house, we live in gratitude. For the firefighters and their tireless work, for our neighbors who stayed and fought flames and embers up and down the road, and for the dear friends who provided a house in which to wait it out.
After the first rain, the hills across the way are blackened, stripped by the fire. But beauty is still there. Just in another form. The fires will come again.
We have so much to learn.
