e are going through very strange times, extremely tough and unpredictable
Win so many ways. In such difficult times, the editorial team of the Swasthya
journal have done a tremendous job in putting together a great collection of articles
which will support our medical fraternity. In this edition of the journal, we have 4
important topics related to paediatrics.
Covid 19 crisis affects all groups and one important concern is the impact on
newborn babies. In this article, the author has looked into important aspects of
Covid 19 infection during pregnancy and its impact on the baby, including rooming
in, when to admit in the neonatal unit, approach to feeding etc. It is a matter of
great relief that the infection so far has not been devastating in this age group,
Buddhdev Pandya MBE though more information will be available as we face greater numbers.

The lockdown and the related problems have led to a flurry of mental health
issues. So, we take this opportunity to discuss three very important aspects. Dr
Mandar Bichu and his co-author have given an overview on approach to discipline in
children, stressing the importance of starting young, having a consistent approach
and tips on how to adapt to the response of the child. It is a fascinating but difficult
topic, and this article would be a great starting point for GPs and paediatricians to
discuss discipline with the families they support.
Dr Adhiraj Joglekar has given a concise overview of a very important topic
in adolescents, Anorexia Nervosa. This is a very challenging problem, and early
involvement of the child and adolescent mental health support (CAMHS) team is
Mr C.R Chandrasekar very important. A high index of suspicion is crucial to enable early recognition
Editor and appropriate support both to the child and family. Dr Adhiraj has also given
an overview of the way CAMHS is organized, which is a very helpful article in this
context.
Dr Kishor Tewary has given an excellent overview of approach to another
important but difficult and sensitive topic in young children, nocturnal enuresis.
He has covered all important aspects of this problem, and the article will serve
as a concise guide to healthcare professionals advising parents on this issue. Dr
Prakash Sahay has introduced a topic of the erectile dysfunction, describing it as
a silent assassin. Prof Gautam Bodiwala has given valuable glance at the history of
the evolution of the A&E in the country. The President of the Indian Psychiatrists
Society has also given an insight to many of its initiatives in COVID 19 pandemic
Dr Sridhar Kalyanasundaram
Editor The current issue of Swasthya has two articles by Dr Saini and Prof Gupta
addressing two extremes of mental health problems.
Extreme depression and other mental health issues can result in self harm and
in extreme circumstances suicide. The intention behind suicide and attempted self
harm is complex. Suicidal ruminations can be dormant or apparent, the trigger
point often difficult to predict or prevent.
Community, family and individual based support mechanisms are necessary to
support the vulnerable in times of need especially in suicide prevention. Dr Saini’s
article sheds light on community based suicide prevention models including St
James Place. Improving mental health and preventing suicide amongst vulnerable
should be key to any mental health strategy.
Dr Santosh Mudholkar
Guest Editor Prof. Gupta’s article addresses another extreme of mental health problem –
malicious acid attack. Acid attacks involve two groups - perpetrator and victim.
