MARIA LLERENAS SOTO - CAPTAIN
Maria enjoys history and art, and she is part of the model UN. Maria is a leader in the Sisters club, a member of the Hispanic and Latino Student Alliance, offers Spanish tutoring to younger students and has been playing the piano since she was about eight years old. In addition to swimming, Maria
is a talented runner who has earned All-Conference and All-State honors, and represents the cross country team on SALT. Her relationship and love for the water began at four years of age and shows no sign of stopping! Being new to Latin in upper school, Maria found the swim team to be a welcom- ing, loving and a supportive group.
She is the ultimate team player who has consistently put the team’s efforts above her own interests. She is very versatile and is always willing to swim any event that will positively impact the team score. Maria has an infectious smile and easygoing, friendly, inclusive personality that make her a joy to have on the team.
KWAME THORNHILL
Joining the Latin family in Middle School, Kwame has been a pillar in the boys’ team’s success throughout his time as a Hawk. He is extremely versatile and has the ability to win
or score big points in all four strokes and at any distance. In the pool he will absolutely race to win using his skill and mental toughness. Kwame had the fastest split on last year’s state record-breaking 200 freestyle relay, and the second-fastest split on the winning 400 free relay from the lead-off position. Kwame’s abilities stretch far beyond the pool. He excels at math and was selected by the Col- lege Board’s National African Amer- ican Recognition program, which considers a student’s GPA and PSAT scores, among other criteria. When he isn’t studying for school, Kwame enjoys tracking business news and stock investments. The sky’s the limit for this Hawk, and we look forward to watching him soar.
CAROLINE VAN NORT
Caroline is a Latin lifer and a long-time swimmer. She took a break from the sport after middle school but returned to competition this year with a renewed passion for the pool. Caroline sets the standard in practice every day with her commitment, toughness and focus. She leads by example and immediate- ly embraced and supported her new teammates. Caroline’s fiery compet- itive nature propelled her to achieve three state qualifying times and she
is chipping away at a fourth state cut. Outside of the pool, Caroline has a job at a local boutique, serves as a Girl-Up leader, plays soccer for the Hawks in the spring, and is a varsity cheerleader. At the beginning of the season, Caroline said she hoped to contribute a positive attitude to the team – she’s accom- plished that goal and far more and we are so grateful that she joined us for her senior year.
