Key Forces Impacting the Imaging Market
Outpatient Migration
Care is moving away from hospital campuses. Radiology groups have new opportunities to develop partnerships. According to 2016 statistics, the growth areas are here:
• 445% Retail Clinics
• 80% Freestanding EDs
• 62% Virtual Consults
• 32% Urgent Care
Clinical Decision Support for
Medicare Outpatients
CMS is serious about CDS. By 2020, expect penalties for non-compliance. Radiology has
an opportunity to lead CDS implementation for health systems and support referrers in CDS use. However, only 3% have CDS implemented. Demonstrating value begins with calculating the impact of CDS. Next, it’s about negotiating with commercial payers.
Radiology Group Consolidation
A growing number of M&A deals are involving radiology groups. Radiology groups wishing to remain independent must compete effectively with large, well-resourced organizations.
MACRA Implementation
MACRA is a zero-sum game designed to repeal the sustainable growth rate. The bonuses of those who succeed will be paid by penalties taken from others who fail to report properly or meet the standards. Implementation means new reporting burdens for radiologists while potentially driving referrers to more tightly manage imaging utilization.
“Patients are more exposed to costs, 56% of Americans search on-line for out-of- pocket costs.”
—Lea Halim, Senior Consultant, The Advisory Board
REDUCED DENIALS AND INCREASED POINT-OF-SERVICE PAYMENTS
Bob White, COO of Greensboro Imaging, shared his experience with Canopy CARE, our new end-to-end automated referral management platform for outpatient imaging providers. Greensboro Imaging reduced denials by more than 50% and increased time of service collections by 500% (from $30,000 to $150,000 per month) in the first few months of using Canopy CARE.
This software system allows imaging providers to automate their entire patient intake process from orders to results, including eligibility checking, payment estimation, and prior authorization. The CARE platform is built on technology already in use at more than 900 hospitals across the country.
