How AI and Smart Software Will Improve Radiology Practices
The next disruption in Radiology will be caused by the transition of Radiology from a profit center to a cost center.
Interruptions are bad for human concentration. Humans are not good at sorting through big lists because they are too easily distracted.
Computers are good at sorting lists. AI is perceived as a coming disrupter that will play a role in helping to eliminate errors commonly made by humans undertaking rote tasks.
• 1 billion exams per year and 4% error rate
• 4% translates to 40M radiologist errors per year
• 60-80% of these errors are perceptual
Radiology groups can thrive during the disruption created by the introduction of new technology. During past disruptions, like PACS, winning groups:
• Were private and large enough to perform their own night reads and deliver subspecialized reading services
• Embraced technology, invested in their own technology and began leveraging it to offer better service at a lower price
AI will introduce a smart workflow by assisting with the following:
• Reducedperceptionerrors
• Increasedradiologistefficiency • ReducedTATforcriticalexams
5/CANOPY PARTNERS | 2017 IMAGING SUMMIT HIGHLIGHTS
“There are 40 million imaging read errors made each year - up to 80% are deemed perceptual
errors.”
