DEEPAK MADHOK
Chairman, Sunbeam Group of Education Institutions
B ased in the holy ancient city of Varanasi, Dr. Deepak Madhok, chairman of the Sunbeam
Group of Education Institutions (SGEI, estb. 1972), supervises the operations of six owned
and 18 associate English-medium private schools spread across India’s most populous Hindi heart-
land state of Uttar Pradesh (pop. 220 million). Moreover, SGEI has also promoted two women’s arts
and science colleges, a free-of-charge vocational training school for under-privileged children, the
Sunbeam Autism Centre, and four hostels housing 2,500 children, in the state. These institutions ed-
ucate 14,000 children in the most pivotal and educationally under-served state of the Indian Union.
SGEI’s six owned CBSE-affiliated English-medium schools in Varanasi have earned excellent rep-
utation with Sunbeam, Bhagwanpur (estb. 1974) routinely ranked Uttar Pradesh’s #1 co-ed day-
cum-boarding school in the annual EducationWorld India School Rankings. Moreover, under the
banner of Sunbeam Eduserve, SGEI has established 18 associate Sunbeam schools under the fran-
chise model to make English-medium K-12 schooling accessible to children in small towns of UP,
including Jaunpur, Ghazipur and Mau.
“For several centuries, children in Eastern UP and the smaller towns of the state beyond Lucknow
have been deprived of high-quality education in English, the national link language, the language
of business, commerce and law and passport to upward social mobility. The mission of SGEI is to
correct this historical injustice,” says Madhok.
