Step 18: Focus on One Task at a Time
The mind can only accurately handle one or two tasks at a time. Habitual
multitasking might save you some time, but it might also compromise the quality
of work. Although multitasking is a wonderful skill, it should only be done when
needed the most and not as your primary reaction to doing things.
The problem here is not just the immediate result but the long-term effect of
regularly doing it. Habitual multitasking reduces ability to concentrate on one
task and also shortens attention span. You take mental focus for granted that you
might have a hard time doing it when the right situation calls for it. You also
grow impatient in finishing tasks because you become used to taking the faster
route all the time. As a result, your become inattentive even during crucial times
when long attention span is demanded.
