P. 55
At the beginning of each year, we introduce
a group of artists our contributors think you
should be keeping an eye out for. At the same
time, and on the basis that art is as much
about ideas as it is about objects, we ask
another group of artists to propose some key
words and concepts connected to a theme that
seems important to art production right now.
This year, the invited artists have responded
to the idea of ‘frontiers’: at a time of heightened
concern about borders – between types of
identities, personal space, neighbours, nations
and news sources – how has our sense of defi-
nitions and divisions changed, and how does
this affect artmaking? Or, indeed, what agency
might artmaking have in relation to the shifting
notions of borders, boundaries or frontiers?
As a starting point for this minimanifesto, we
used the following statement by French writer
Georges Perec, one that gets to the slippery
nature of frontier conditions and their curious
elision of the real and the imaginary.
