The border interior
The border is a performance, a drama.
Both tragedy and farce, with sets so vast
that in places it’s all floodlights and eye walls,
while elsewhere it’s just a poem composed
of wildflowers and chicken wire. A poem about
what goes where. The border is a membrane,
permeable as a body. [You may] enter here,
but don’t go there. The border is interior. Open
to [an] Other and the wave will swell through
your home, they said: you could lose your foot-
ing and be carried away. Every body a house
shuttered up, a citadel. The border a skinny rag
banner held aloft by every raised hand in town.

Artifice
Frontiers and borders are imaginary.
Yet crossing a border is a material
event, an experience of the line that
divides artifice from reality. Performing
the crossing is what matters, objects
are gathered in the process. Archives
are arrays of baggage lost during
these crossings, waiting to be picked
up at another event of crossing, only
to be lost again.
of artifice.
