We didn’t cross the border,
the border crossed us
Nothing can be more clear and
prescient than the immigrant
rights movement slogan ‘we
didn’t cross the border, the border
crossed us’. The annexation of
half of Mexico by the USA and
the subsequent demonisation
and disenfranchisement of a pop-
ulation that has been crossing
and recrossing these imaginary
lines for centuries exemplifies
the sardonic sadism of the nine-
teenth century manifest destiny
that made ‘America’ ‘great’.
