IM AGE DOCTOR
THINK FAST
When he saw a feeding New
Holland Honeyeater in his
bottle brush, Yaroslaw Olender
rushed inside and grabbed his
camera which, according to
him “fortunately had no flat
batteries and had my 500mm
lens attached”.
This is still a grab shot as you
didn’t probably have enough time
to think through your settings
before shooting or adjust them
after the first shot. Handholding
with a 500mm focal length
means you need to have a much
faster shutter speed, say 1/1000s
@ ISO 800, in order to get the
image sharp. You are shooting a
mobile subject and using a long
lens, which doubles the risk of
movement with either the camera
or subject. The general rule of
shooting with an inverse number
to the focal length ie 1/500s @
500mm, is still a good guide, but
a faster speed is even better in
this sort of situation. The framing
also could have been better, with
less of that background and the
flower and more of the feet and
tail of the bird.
