In the UK, the government body – the MHRA – has compiled an excellent guidance document for laser/IPL users entitled “Lasers, intense light source systems and LEDs – guidance for safe use in medical, surgical, dental and aesthetic practices”, which sets out their advice on Local Rules. In addition, an appropriate Risk Assessment should be carried out by a qualified practitioner and recorded, on a reasonably regular basis (at least once every year).
Multiple lasers in the same room/clinic
In some locations more than one laser may be used. This presents a particular potential problem in that many sets of laser safety glasses will be required. In our experience, some laser operators are not sure which glasses they should be wearing with which laser!
A simple way to ensure safety is to colour-code the glasses. Our preferred method is to place coloured dots onto each set of glasses with another colour dot, of the same colour, onto the laser which corresponds to those glasses.
