Designated Laser Room
It is a requirement in many countries to designate specific rooms for laser use. These rooms must comply with the legislation to ensure safe use of the equipment. Such rooms must follow rules such as:
Light cannot escape from the room to the outside environment
All doors must be lockable from the inside
Appropriate window blinds/curtains must be used to prevent light escaping The ‘Local Rules’ must be kept in the room
- these Rules must be read, understood and signed off by all laser operators
The number of reflective objects should be kept to a minimum, especially mirrors Laser warning signs must be on all entry points when the laser is in use
All required laser safety equipment must be kept in the room
All required safety and operation manuals must be kept in the room
A fire extinguisher is strongly recommended – CO2 or foam – NEVER water!!
The emphasis in on safety – all designated laser rooms must be use in accordance with the safety laws and local legislation. In many countries, the insurance companies demand all of the above are followed.
The above is a brief outline of some of the more important laser/IPL safety considerations. To ensure your laser clinic is safe, please employ the services of a fully qualified and certificated Laser Protection Adviser, if possible.
