Chapter 1 – Fundamentals of Medical/Aesthetic Lasers and IPLs v1.1
All the home-use laser units are classed as ‘Class 1C’. (see Section 1.4 ‘Laser Classifications’), only if they output laser energy. Most are not lasers – they use either flashlamps or LEDs. These devices do not come under the laser ‘Classification’ system.
The Class 1C is designed such that there must be specific engineering controls inside the units which prevents the emission of potentially hazardous laser energy, unless the device is in physical contact with the skin.
Figure 21: Typical ‘home-use’ IPL devices available today.
Most home-use systems are not lasers – they use mini IPLs instead – although they are often advertised as “lasers” incorrectly!
A recent study by Dr Godfrey Town found that these units can have a beneficial effect on hair – but only if used frequently. (Click here for Dr Town’s report).
(Our thanks go to Dr Town for his assistance in this section).
